Why Your Paint is Bubbling in Sydney homes (The Real Cost of a Cheap Quote in Sydney)

Freshly painting room that was bubbling in Sydney

I got three call-outs last month in Guildford and Merrylands for the exact same thing. Homeowner went with the cheapest quote, paint looked great for six months, then the first hot week hit and the front of the house started bubbling like blisters. Then it peeled off in sheets.

It's not bad luck. It's Sydney weather meeting a rushed job.

Why paint bubbles in Sydney homes

We get 35-degree heat, then a southerly with rain the next day. If the prep is skipped, moisture gets trapped. Four main causes I see every week:

1. No proper wash down

Paint over dust, chalk or salt and it never sticks. We pressure wash every exterior in Western Sydney first.

2. Cheap paint or wrong paint

A lot of budget jobs use contractor-grade paint watered down. It looks fine wet, but it has no flexibility. We use Dulux Weathershield or Dulux Aquanamel for trims — they're made for UV and expansion. That's why Dulux gives a warranty and cheap paint doesn't.

3. Skipped primer

Painting straight onto bare render, fibro or previously peeling surfaces. Primer is what glues it down. No primer = peeling in 12 months guaranteed.

4. Painting in bad conditions

Painting in direct sun at 2pm or when rain is coming. The surface skins, traps moisture, then bubbles.

The "cheap quote" trap

I'm not here to bag other painters, but here's the maths. A proper exterior in Guildford takes 3 days prep, 2 days paint. A cheap job does it in 2 days total. That means no wash, no sanding, no primer, one thin coat.

You save $1,500 now. You pay $8,000 in 18 months to strip it all back and start again. I've quoted five of these strip-backs this year alone.

How we fix bubbling and peeling properly

At iPaint & Co we don't just paint over the problem. We fix the cause.

1. Strip back all loose and bubbled paint back to a solid edge

2. Wash and sand the whole area, not just the patch

3. Prime with Dulux 1-Step Prep or oil-based primer for trouble spots

4. Two full coats of Dulux Weathershield, applied early morning out of direct heat

5. We give you the Dulux warranty paperwork, not just a handshake

We did this exact process on a weatherboard in Guildford last month and a brick veneer in Merrylands the week before. Both had been painted 14 months earlier by someone else. Photos are on our Instagram.

If you're in Guildford, see our local painting service here. Same process for Merrylands homeowners here.

How to spot a job that will fail

Ask these three questions before you accept any quote in Sydney:

1. Will you pressure wash and sand first?

2. What specific Dulux product are you using, and will you prime?

3. Do you provide a written warranty on prep and product?

If they hesitate on any of those, walk away.

Paint bubbling isn't a paint problem. It's a prep problem. Sydney sun will find every shortcut.
